Grandfather's Christmas Tree by Keith Strand; illustrated by Thomas Locker
A new Christmas book about hope. A pioneer family's first winter tests survival skills in the Colorado wilderness. A poignant story brought to life by Locker's stunning paintings. A treasure.

Crossing the New Bridge by Emily Arnold McCully
The Jubilattis are hired to build a new bridge, but the mayor must find the happiest person in town to cross it or the bridge will be cursed! A Caldecott Medallist, the author/illustrator combines laughter and wisdom in an original folk tale about happiness and how to find it. (Sorry, this book is out of print.)

My Painted House, My Friendly Me by Maya Angelou
A wonderful collaboration between a world-renowned poet and a talented photojournalist (Margaret Courtney-Clarke). Set in South Africa, the book tells the tale of Thandi, an eight-year-old girl of the Ndebele tribe. Thandi helps her mother paint the beautiful wall designs that are the signature of the tribe.

Time Train by Paul Fleischman; illustrated by Claire Ewart
This Newberry-winning author takes the reader on a prehistoric trip through time. Miss Pynn, a school teacher, is horrified to see her students cook dinosaur egg for breakfast, go Stegosaurus-riding, and Pterodactyl-gliding. The kids, as you can guess, love the adventure with creatures from the past.

Ooh-La-La (Max in Love) by Maria Kalman
Meet Fritz from the Ritz, Madam Camembert, Charlotte Russe, and Pierre Potpourri. An outrageous trip through "pluperfect Paris" with Max Stravinsky, the dog poet from New York. Go figure.

Wretched Stone by Chris Van Allsburg
The crew of the Rita Ann is mesmerized by a huge glowing rock. Will the captain be able to save himself and his beastly crew? Newberry-winner Van Allsburg charms us again.
