Mark your calendars!!!! Author David Horace Harwell will be signing his book Walker Percy Remembered: A Potrait in the Words of Those Who Knew Him at Maple Street Book Shop on Saturday, September 9, from 11:00 a.m. until noon. As you know, Maple Street Book Shop has a very special place in its heart for Walker Percy. Percy was a friend of Maple Street's owner Rhoda Faust, and he also had an intimate relationship with the shop itself, allowing us to have book signings for him desipte his usual reclusive nature.
Walker Percy Remembered contains thirteen interviews which reveal Percy's character, his writing process, his dedication to civil rights issues and his friendships with people regardless of religious, ethnic, and economic differences. Author David Horace Harwell is an assistant professor of English Literature at Thammasat University in Thailand. The date and time for the signing is Saturday, September 9, from 11:00 a.m. until noon. In the meantime, please feel free to read a review of the book on the University of North Carolina Press website. The internet has become and even more valuable tool for correspondence in these times when phone lines are still down and cell phone converstations consist more of the words "What?" and "You're breaking up..." than anything else, so we're glad to be of service in getting those lines of communication up and running again. We've set up a table in the front yard with chairs for your use and our people room offers chairs and a couch, as well. October 2005 We're open again! The shop survived Hurricane Katrina in excellent condition. Come by to chat about books and everything! Our new hours are Monday-Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. We look forward to seeing all of our old customers and some new ones, too. New to the Book Shops: Our fence has been turned into a
Community Bulletin Board where anyone can post their needs and services.
We're also offering free coffee due to the lack of open coffee shops on
Maple Street at the present time, and a book exchange is now located on
our front porch.
